Gnat’s Navels and Hollywood Agents’ Hearts

The other kind of agent is eternally popular in fiction because they represent actors, novelists, screenwriters and television news reporters. They are rarely depicted warmly; like the Grinch, their hearts are said to be two sizes too small. Hence, the phrase I learned from my mother that I have used my entire life to describe something infinitesimal: “It would fit in a gnat’s navel and leave room left over for a Hollywood Agent’s Heart.”
