P.S. A Column On Things

By PAUL E. SCHINDLER JR. I am from Portland, Oregon, Beaumont ’66, Benson High ’70, MIT ’74. Some things are impossible to know, but it is impossible to know these things.

The tech staff of The Chronicles became sick to death of hearing this story repeated. Each show began with a sound check: people in front of the camera were asked to say a few words so their volume level could be established. I was once told to rein it in. The sound person said, “You are wearing a microphone so you don’t have to speak directly to the people at home.” The people there for that taping know the story is true. The others just wish they’d heard it less often.

Two Gary Kildall stories:

I heard Gary say several times, "If Gates didn't steal CP/M to create DOS, ask him why there is a null at" some particular code location. Kildall says it was a signature to detect code theft. That was good enough for me.

Gary’s company was originally called Intergalactic Digital Research, as he loved to remind people.
