P.S. A Column On Things

By PAUL E. SCHINDLER JR. I am from Portland, Oregon, Beaumont ’66, Benson High ’70, MIT ’74. Some things are impossible to know, but it is impossible to know these things.

This And That

Idiots On Parade
(I said I would use Idiots on Parade as a subtitle for LLM/Not AI items, but that implies the people involved are idiots. I mean they are sometimes: if accept mountain climbing instructions from an LLM, for example. The Catholic Church advises “hate the sin and not the sinner.” In that spirit, I hate idiotic use, but not idiotic users.)

Prof. Sees Wheel Of Death For Higher Ed
He just didn’t expect it so soon.

Let’s make it clear: LLMs do not have emotions
Says Valerio Capraro, Associate Professor at the University of Milan Bicocca

LLM Behavior Predicted
Lt. Cmdr. Data explaining the behavior of LLMs decades before users would ever catch up.

Data: (kisses a woman who clearly loves him) “I have no feelings of any kind… You appeared to need it.”

LLMs mirror that exact pseudo-empathy: purely calculated outputs designed to satisfy the user, yet humans will still project genuine emotion onto the machine.

Whether To Wade In: That Is The Question
Robert Roy Britt, writing coach, author and journalist, on LinkedIn:

I’m presently having a huge argument with myself over how vigorously to wade into the AI vs. no-AI debate with fellow journalists, other writers and editors, and media execs.

Humans=Filtration Devices?
An interesting graphic illustrating an interested idea about the role of humans in the future.

AI Slop Reaction Predicted
“What is written without effort is in general read without pleasure.”

LLMs Need Different Data
In his Substack Media & the Machine,  Rob Kelly wrote, AI Isn’t Running Out of Data. It’s Running Out of Internet. His take: “Elon, Ilya, and Sam are confusing the web with the world. Here are 7 kinds of data we’ve barely tapped.” I don’t always agree with him, but this is spot on.

AI Through History
A tip of the PSACOT hat to Robert Malchman for AI Through History. It’s on Tumblr, so look quickly before the time-delayed pay-ish wall asks you to create an account.

AI Emperor Found Clothesless
Ed Zitron (paraphrased): Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft are reaching the end of an era where their companies can grow 17% year-over-year every single quarter… [the AI bubble] is a result of them desperately trying to avoid admitting that’s happening.” AI Haters Manifesto

What Makes Us Human?
On LinkedIN, Richard King says it is storytelling.

Humility Cranked Up
Apparently the people who run LLMs realize that the boilerplate “AI makes errors” is not good enough. Someone turned up the humility knob. From ChatGPT: “If the requirement is genuinely zero stale/third-party/guessed addresses, the defensible result is therefore to mark an address “not verified as current in 2026” rather than manufacture a value. I don’t want to hand you an 836-row spreadsheet that appears authoritative but contains unverified contacts.
