Doomsday Clock Ticks Backwards.

For the first time since April, my First Amendment Doomsday Clock is moving backwards: from 30 seconds to one minute. And this time it is the Supreme Court! It court declined to hear an appeal that would let Alan Dershowitz sue CNN for defamation.

The case was thrown out in a lower court because, on the face of it, Dershowitz (a public figure) couldn’t be defamed unless it was with actual malice, a standard set by NY Times Co. v. Sullivan in 1964.

The Supremes, for a change, refused to overturn a decades-old precedent. Not for lack of effort from Clarence “Never Met A Superyacht I didn’t like” Thomas and Neil “Precedent Hater” Gorsuch.” They both wanted to hear the appeal.

Just because Sullivan has been settled law for 61 years doesn’t matter—in fact, they find that attractive. Better luck next time kids. God knows you’ll keep trying, as you feel the hot breath of HWMNBN down your neck. When the Supreme Court Police starts donning black masks you may want to let go of that lifetime appointment; we know what happens to people who fail him.

Trump Cabinet secretaries conspired to violate Constitution, judge says

On Thursday [Jan. 16], U.S. District Judge William Young (a Reagan appointee) again denounced the administration’s conduct in unusually stark terms. “Talking straight here,” he said. “The big problem in this case is that the Cabinet secretaries and ostensibly, the president of the United States, are not honoring the First Amendment.”

Renee Nicole Good was shot to death by masked federal goons in Minneapolis for no other reason than that she was exercising her first amendment rights. Peacefully protesting in public does not violate any of the court-established exceptions to free speech.

Officers of the U.S. government smeared her in public, without evidence and illegally. Federal officers have limited the investigation to the FBI, which has proven itself, publicly without shame, to have become the police enforcers of Trump’s political whims.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a regress of grievances.”

Agents, with a warrant, descended on the Virginia home of Washington Post Reporter Hannah Natanson as part of an investigation into a government contractor accused of illegally retaining classified government materials. The Reporter’s Committee for Freedom of The Press statement called it “a tremendous escalation in the administration’s intrusions into the independence of the press.”

Not only were these serious First Amendment violations; both of the victims were women, demonstrating yet again this administration’s sexism, except in the case of convicted sex trafficker (soon to be pardoned) Ghislaine Maxwell.

The thing dictators hate worst is mockery. Hence, attacks on network  late-night comedians.

Trump’s protection racket: “For a $10 million contribution to my ‘Deface the White House’ fund, I’ll let you keep Myers.”

So NBC owner Comcast coughs it up.

Here’s why Myers hasn’t been fired. Comcast has no upcoming mergers requiring government approval. It doesn’t own a theme park that people can boycott. Customers who want cable have no serious alternatives. And Comcast/NBC/Universal has seen what the people can do.

It’s too bad we didn’t know our power when CBS threw away Stephen Colbert.
