I've been pushing the deflation angle for quite a while. keeping inflation very low and/or pushing for deflation means that if people owe you money they pay with expensive dollars. If inflation ramps up, you pay with dollars that are worth less and less. It is easier to pay off your loan. The farmers wanted inflation through the free and unlimited coinage of silver and the bankers wanted to deflation through keeping the gold standard. The farmers wanted to pay off their loans with cheap money.
