I, Paul E. Schindler, Jr., am driving my stake in the ground right here. I invented the podcast in March 2000 when I worked at Byte.com for CMP Media. I have an actual claim to May 1998, with the launch of the TechWeb Week in Review (thank you for reminding me Dan Rosebaum), but all those files were on media.cmpnet.com. As part of the management’s thorough use of the memory hole, media.cmpnet.com was destroyed without backup, just as every archival/library copy of every CMP print publication has ceased to exist. No complete archive anywhere.

The world’s first podcast was said to have taken place in 2004. But I think any reasonable definition of podcast would include a weekly spoken-word audio program, available on the Internet only. Yes, people had to listen on  MP3 players or on their Desktop speakers, but we know they listened. I don’t think the iPod had to exist for there to be podcasts.
