P.S. A Column On Things

By PAUL E. SCHINDLER JR. I am from Portland, Oregon, Beaumont ’66, Benson High ’70, MIT ’74. Some things are impossible to know, but it is impossible to know these things.

Whiffenpoofs

October 19, 2025

The Whifenpoofs performed Sunday, October 19 at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. I would’ve missed the performance if not for my younger daughter.

I’m a big fan of a cappella singing as many of you know. This venerable Yale a cappella group is 118 years old. Cole Porter is an alumnus and Rudi Valley (a Yale man) is an honorary alumnus.

The group went coed in 2018. After more than a century, it’s about time… or if you count from 1969, when Yale went coed, a mere 41 years. The group is amazing. The soloists were impressive, and the rest of the group knows how to snap, slap, and harmonize. They perform in white tie and tails which makes a classy group even classier.

If you’re having trouble placing them, think of the song that has the chorus “we are poor little lambs who have lost our way.”

I haven’t been on Bart in a long time. Due to ignorance, catching the cable car back to the BART station was a long downhill slog.

Again, worth it. They have 200 performances a year; catch one if you can.

My goodness -- you were there! Wish I'd seen you. My favorite was the Chinese tenor doing Rainbow Connection, though close behind were Nature Boy (from The Boy With Green Hair), a little known but stunning piece, and Midnight Train to Georgia, to which I know the entire Pips part and almost mounted the stage to sing/dance along but forgot my tux. RuthE really liked the restrained, unamplified sound that made you lean in to hear River. What a night!
